Consul-General at Canton relative to the case of Chung Sau-nam, to which reference is made in my Confidential Despatch of even

date.

In these proceedings, which commenced during

my absence from the Colony, the Chinese Authorities were permitted, at their particular request, to engage Solicitors and Counsel to assist the Law Officers of the Crown. The case was a heavy one, of very considerable importance, and it was thought advisable, having in view the possible event of an issue unfavourable to those Authorities, to allow them in the special circumstances the assistance which they desired.

I may state that four applications for

extradition were made by the Canton Government in 1913, and seven applications have been made during the current year.
